Stefanie Tschirky

Stefanie Tschirky is originally from a small village called Heiligkreuz, in the eastern part of Switzerland. In 2009 She moved to London and graduated in July 2016 form the Royal College of Art London.

Stefanie Tschirky’s design world is driven to find the beautiful, ordered, and unpredictable moments of complexity in the study of the field of mathematics. The design concepts are based on the desire for aesthetic perfection in a controlled but chaotic system.

As a starting point of Stefanie Tschirky’s final collection, she questioned if we are able to create the ‘perfect’ dress, silhouette and line with the help of science. Stefanie Tschirky started to look into theories such as the Golden Ratio Theory and the Chaos Theory. It led her to work with mathematics and physics students from Imperial College London.

What does perfection even mean? Does perfection exist? No? If perfection doesn’t exist, does imperfection exist? Stefanie Tschirky and her collaborators focused the research on the Chaos Theory and its fragile system. You never know when the most ‘beautiful’ moment happens. Do we have to wait a year or is it happening in the next second?

Stefanie Tschirky translated the idea of the fragile system of the chaos into textiles. Over the last year, she focused on creating a ‘mixture’ which she was able to apply to threads and clingfilm. With the help of this ‘mixture’ she was able to create garments which seem to seal the body and appear as a second skin. Each garment is unique and based on a chaotic behaviour of the fabrics. Stefanie Tschirky was able to control the allover ‘system (garment)’ but not each ‘practical’ within the system.
